In a well-made prosthetic eye, tears should flow evenly across the prosthesis just as they do over the natural eye — in a sheet-like fashion, rather than collecting in droplets. We call this type of behavior hydrophilic — “water loving.” Hydrophobic (“water fearing”) artificial eyes repel water, much like the surface of a waxed car.

Retinoblastoma (reh-tin-oh-blast-oma) is a childhood cancer arising from immature retinal cells in one or both eyes and can strike from the time a child is in the womb up to 5 years of age. This cancer is curable if caught early enough. However, 87% of the children stricken with this disease worldwide die, mostly in developing countries. Enucleation is removal of the eye, leaving the eye muscles and remaining orbital contents intact. This type of ocular surgery is indicated for a number of different ocular tumors, in eyes that have suffered severe trauma, and in eyes that are blind and painful owing to other disease.[1]
